Cafe Flesh, a post-nuclear New Wave porn feature, is short (73 minutes) but decidedly not sweet. The "Nuclear Kiss" has rendered 99% of the population unable to have sex -- they've become Sex Negatives. The remaining one percent of Sex Positives are required by the government to perform public sex acts for the benefit (torment?) of the frustrated Sex Negatives. The movie is titled after a sex nightclub frequented by the Negatives and MC-ed by an obnoxious former stand-up comedian named Max Melodramatic (Andrew Nichols), clearly patterned on Joel Grey in Cabaret. "I get off on your need," he taunts the Negatives.
The plot centers on a Sex Negative couple, Nick (Paul McGibboney) and Lana (Pia Snow), who are addicted to the nightly shows at Cafe Flesh. Nick keeps trying to make love to Lana, but he gets violently sick. Lana fakes being ill -- unbeknownst to Nick, she's actually a Sex Positive who has stuck with him out of love. But she becomes increasingly lustful as the movie goes on; she knows she could join the Positives in their sex games if she wanted to, and she's starting to want to.
If you've seen even a little porn, you know how rare it is for a sexually explicit film to bother with such things as a plot or even a premise, and when they do attempt a plot, it's usually fast-forward-worthy. Cafe Flesh holds your interest throughout. It begins in a daringly abrasive way (Max jeering at the Cafe Flesh audience -- and at us, too, as he grins right into the camera) and hooks us not with hardcore sex (though it has that, too) but with its ideas and conflicts. The script, by director Stephen Sayadian and writer Jerry Stahl (later the subject of the 1998 biopic Permanent Midnight), is tight, efficient, and often acridly witty.
In short, it's a pomo’s porno. It gives you more and less than you expect.

"Suzie Superstar" released by NuTech Digital as part of its Adult Classic Series, is just that: A Classic.
What's even more fun is to see some Real Porn Icons at their very best. Starring the late Shauna Grant, this shot-on-film 1984 production by Robert McCallum also has: John Leslie, Joey Silvera, Ron Jeremy, Jon Martin, Sharon Mitchell, Gayle Sterling and Laurie Smith. Whew!
And, because this is Classic Porn, you get a well-told story on top of some passionate, well-photographed sex. In fact, this is a story you could probably see on Y2K cable in a series like "Sex & the City."
First the story: Suzie Mitchell (Grant) is a Pat Benatar-type rock star: sexy, tough, with a hard-driving rock sound. Suzie's manager (Leslie) is using her - and everyone else around him - for his own personal pleasure, and doesn't care about Suzie, the band, its music or its fans. In a bit of fiction imitating fact, Leslie's character is a golf fanatic - just like John Leslie.
The storyline, revolving around how Grant gets the band free of Leslie, has some killer sex. The top prize in the sex department goes to the Grant/Leslie fuck fest. Which is not surprising considering that Grant and Leslie are the film's stars; and in the early eighties Leslie was THE porn stud. No female porn performer could consider herself a star until she had the female lead opposite Leslie. To fuck him gave a girl "status" in porn. And in this DVD he's at his best: dressed sharp in casual golf outfits and with the manly good looks and appeal of mainstream actor George Clooney, Leslie is the bomb. Plus, Leslie had the best sexual skills and technique that porn has ever seen. He genuinely loved women and knew what to do to bring out the best in each female he was teamed with. During their sex scene, Leslie taunts Grant ("Don't I give you enough dick?" he says as she rides him cowgirl) encouraging her to fuck him out of love or hate - it doesn't matter as long as they both get off! Leslie's technique with Grant proved you could "work" a good sexual performance out of a female without going into Max Hardcore, Extreme or "rough sex" territory.
Adding visual support to Leslie's verbal act, McCallum uses his camera to get some of the best shots of Grant fucking ever captured on film. She's first positioned on top of Leslie, cowgirl style, with her beautiful ass sliding/pumping up and down on his dick. Next, after a reverse cowgirl there is the doggie shot to end all doggie shots: first Leslie repeatedly teases Shauna with his dick, inserting and pulling all the way out of her pussy, with the camera over his shoulder looking down at her up-turned ass. This shot transitions to a side-view shot, of Grant repeatedly impaling her butt on Leslie's dick (no anal), rocking back and forth as she does it. The scene finishes with a long missionary position fuck: with Grant's head, low in the frame, almost off the end of the bed, while Leslie spreads her open wide, resting one of her legs over his shoulder as he pounds away in her pussy. He shoots his cum on her stomach.
The Grant/Leslie scene alone is worth the price of the DVD, but there are other treasures, too. The almost-forgotten Jon Martin gets Gayle Sterling and Laurie Smith in a groupie three-way. This skinny guy with a big dick really shows some stamina and technique - alternating between both girls, riding and getting ridden with equal amounts of gusto.
There's also a scene between Shauna Grant and Joey Silvera that, while short, is still pretty hot. Joey gets Shauna in the missionary, after singing her a love song (all voices are dubbed), and then does what comes naturally. As quickies go, this one is pretty good.
John Leslie also has two scenes with Laura Lazarre, who, as far as I know, didn't make any other porn flicks. Since Leslie is incapable of a bad performance, these two scenes work better than should be expected. They are classically filmed, one in front of a fire place, the other in a hot tub. Speaking of water sports (no, not that!) Leslie gets Miss Sharon Mitchell in a shower at the end of the film. John and "Mitch" actually manage a standing doggie, a blowjob and a down-on-the-shower-floor missionary fuck. That's the kind of creativity you get with old pros.
Finally, some kind words must be said about Ron Jeremy in this picture. Playing the "enforcer" to Leslie's sleazy manager, Ron blackmails the groupies, Smith and Sterling, into having sex with him in the back seat of a car in order to get into a rock concert that's already over. Ron keeps his mouth shut for most of the scene, and lets his dick speak for his abilities. He's really quite good in this scene; he seems to especially enjoy Gayle Sterling, who was in and out of porn in a flash (And is often confused with "Cindy Sterling", which was Jamie Summers' first "nom de porn"). Ron also gets a blowjob from Shauna, who must service him in order to get into her own house (Boy is this character sleazy, or what!). While Shauna doesn't seem to enjoy this action as much as her scenes with Leslie or Silvera, she gives it her best, and Ron doesn't spoil it with non-funny jokes. All in all, I think it's his best porn performance.
John Leslie, who went on to a very creditable directing career, was never more "bad boy" charming than in this film. His "talk dirty to me" persona and technique worked extremely well with Shauna, who was never comfortable in porn. (In one of the numerous documentaries on Shauna after her suicide, her best friend, Laurie Smith, said that neither girl ever filmed a sex scene without the help of drugs.)
Shauna Grant, the blonde and beautiful all-natural body from Minnesota, was too shy for even this early (kinder and gentler) porn era. This was far and away her best performance: better than "Virginia" which some old timers think is her best.
While Shauna was always "awkward" in her porn performances, she always wanted recognition from the industry. When she didn't win the Best Female awards for "Suzie Superstar" (though the film did win the Best Picture award from Adam's Film World) Shauna was so upset that she went into retirement. Shauna should have, could have and (maybe) would have been the first Vivid Contract Girl in 1986 when Ginger Lynn, who was more partner than contract girl, retired. Instead by 1986 Shauna was dead, and another girl-next-door wholesome blonde (Jamie Summers) became the first high-priced contract porn girl.
Robert McCallum has directed numerous quality porn films, and to see his work should be required of all the wanna-be porn directors of today. It might be helpful in teaching them how to tell a story and frame a scene.
Bottom Line: Check this out to see a well-produced classic from the Golden Age of Porn. As for the music, performed by "Horizon", it's good lite-rock. This is what Quality Porn is supposed to be about.
